Week 11, Term 1 Newsletter

Nau mai, haere mai e te whanau ki te wiki nei. “Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi With your food basket and my food basket the people will thrive”.

It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of Term 1. Thank you all for a start we have had to our year. Highlights include our Beach camp to Managwahi, Grahams Beach trip, swimming sports, Franklin Cultural Festival, student leadership conferences, Waitangi Falls unveiling, eye on nature enviro visit, Sullivan’s Cup, Polyfest, Kahui Ako kapa haka and our success at rippa rugby. We introduced the Singapore Maths No Problem mathematics programme and began trailing Writers Toolbox. There has been a focus on our Whanau teams and the change to Takaro and Kai time has given students much needed regulation time resulting in calm prepared starts to the block of learning. 

Orienteering and ANZAC

This week we have students competing at both Waiuku and Franklin orienteering on Tuesday and Thursday. Our senior rangatahi begin their filming as part of the Waiuku Kahui Ako Kapa Haka community project. On Friday we have our ANZAC school service. All whanau are welcome. The service starts at 10.00am and we ask that all whanau be seated by 9.50am. We would like all our year 8 students to bring a plate of baking. There will be refreshments after the school service. Our RSA are attending. Poppies can be purchased from the school office. There is no class assembly this Friday and school will finish at the usual time. 

On Thursday 25th April is our Waiuku Town ANZAC service. We would like as many students to attend as possible. Students need to wear their school uniform. We will meet by Franklin Vets Centre as a school at 10.25am. We will march as part of the town parade for the service at the cenotaph. We expect the service to be completed by 12pm. 

Last week our students in years 4-8 sat their end of term assessments for easttle in reading and mathematics. There were some good shifts for most students. Easttle results contribute towards the teacher judgement of where a student sits within the NZ Curriculum levels. However the greatest evidence we use is a student’s engagement and successes against our school progressions. A few important TERM 2 dates to save:

  • Franklin Teachers Only Day: Tuesday 4th June. School is closed. 
  • Akonui Hui: Monday 10th June and Tuesday 11th June. There are no classes on these days, however supervision is available for those whanau who need it. Please email the office if you need to book your child in. Bookings for Akonui Hui will open in week 3. 
  • Glenbrook Matariki Concert: Friday 5th July. Starting at 4pm. Information will be sent out closer to the time. 

Thank you whanau for your support of our beautiful kura this term. Have a lovely term break and we look forward to seeing you for the start of Term 2 on Monday 29th April. (If not before at the ANZAC service).  “He kai kei aku ringa”, There is food at the end of my hands.
