Te Ara Huarau | School Profile Report

Background

This Profile Report was written within four months of the Education Review Office and Glenbrook School working in Te Ara Huarau, an improvement evaluation approach used in most English Medium State and State Integrated Schools. For more information about Te Ara Huarau see ERO’s website. www.ero.govt.nz

Context

Glenbrook School is located in a rural environment near Waiuku, providing education for students in Years 1 to 8. The school has strong connections to its local and wider communities and is an active member of the Waiuku Kāhui Ako and Franklin District schools.

Glenbrook School’s strategic priorities for improving outcomes for learners are:

  • accelerating ako agency by strengthening learning with ākonga, kaiako and whānau
  • enabling strong and effective leadership for equity and excellence.

You can find a copy of the school’s strategic and annual plan on Glenbrook School’s website.

ERO and the school are working together to evaluate how effectively the school’s curriculum is challenging learners to excel and achieve excellence, enabling equitable outcomes for all learners.

The rationale for selecting this evaluation is:

  • the school’s commitment to responding effectively to student achievement data to enable increasingly effective outcomes for all learners
  • the importance of continuing to strengthen engagement and empowerment in learning (ako agency) with all stakeholders.

The school expects to see the effectiveness of practices and processes continually enhanced to enable ongoing improvement and success for all learners.

Strengths

The school can draw from the following strengths to support its goal to achieve equitable and excellent outcomes for all learners:

  • collaborative, strategic leadership that is highly focused on continuous improvement
  • comprehensive systems, processes and practices that contribute to effective conditions that learners need to succeed
  • consistency in teaching and learning practices that increasingly builds evaluative skills in a positive school culture.

Where to next?

Moving forward, the school will prioritise:

  • continuing to strengthen the school’s collective approach to achieving equitable and excellent outcomes for learners
  • continuing to implement targeted actions to enable alignment with the national and local curriculum and challenge learners to excel.

ERO’s role will be to support the school in its evaluation for improvement cycle to improve outcomes for all learners. ERO will support the school in reporting their progress to the community. The next public report on ERO’s website will be a Te Ara Huarau | School Evaluation Report and is due within three years.
