
Kia ora and Welcome to Team Tui
Team Tui consists of three classes: Te Whenua, Te Kauri and Te Rakau Nui. Our students are in years 3 and 4. In Team Tui students are introduced to increased digital technology platforms for learning that are carefully balanced.
Mathematics and Statistics in Team Tui (Year 3-4)
Mathematics and Statistics in Team Tui is taught a minimum of four times a week. Students are cross grouped across the Tui Team. Learning sessions are 45-60 minutes. Mathematics and Statistics programmes consist of clear learning intentions, enriched activities followed by students articulating success criteria and next steps.
A different strand is taught every three to four weeks. Number and Algebra is the focus of 60-80% of Mathematics teaching time. Student are grouped according to needs taking into consideration current data and classroom evidence. Students would expect to have explicit teaching in their groups at least twice a week. Enriched follow up activities support the learning intentions and include Mathletics, textbooks and games.
Literacy In Team Tui (Year 3-4)
Reading Programme:
Reading in Team Tui is taught a minimum of four times a week. Students are cross grouped across the Tui Team. Student are grouped according to needs taking into consideration current data and classroom evidence. Students would expect to have explicit teaching in their groups at least twice a week. Learning sessions are 45-60 minutes. Reading programmes consist of clear learning intentions, enriched activities followed by students articulating success criteria and next steps.
Students are able to take reading books home daily for further support from their group choosing box, read online books through Sunshine Classics and withdraw books weekly from the school library.
Writing Programme:
Writing in Team Tui is taught a minimum of four times a week. Students are cross grouped across the Tui Team. Student are grouped according to needs taking into consideration current data and classroom evidence. Learning sessions are 45-60 minutes. Writing programmes consist of clear learning intentions, enriched activities followed by students articulating success criteria and next steps. Each genre is taught for five week blocks.
Magic Words:
Magic Words is a programme targeting high-frequency words. The emphasis is on instant recognition of high-frequency words. At Glenbrook, Students reading on the colour wheel are tested and given sight words to practise at their appropriate level. Students take a copy of their current Magic Words home each day and are tested regularly to check progress. Magic Words can be administered by a teacher, Teaching Aide, other staff member or parent helper.
Handwriting:
Students in Team Tui are taught letter formation using the Casey Caterpillar story. Handwriting sessions focus on the development of fine motor control, correct pencil grip, left to right orientation, the ability to cross the midline and to form shapes correctly.
