What can I do to help my child’s learning?
- Ensure your child arrives at school on time so they can settle, connect with peers, and be ready for learning when lessons begin.
- Stay informed through the HERO Parent Portal so you are aware of key dates, events, and classroom updates.
- Talk with your child each day about their learning and experiences. Showing interest helps build confidence, connection, and a positive attitude to school.
- Celebrate their effort and progress. Positive encouragement strengthens learner motivation and wellbeing.
- Make sure they have appropriate clothing for the season and school activities, including named items when needed.
- Provide plenty of healthy food to support concentration and energy throughout the day.
- Support good sleep routines. Experts recommend around 10 hours of sleep per night for primary-aged children.
- Encourage daily reading, whether this is reading to you, with you, or independently.
- Read and return school notices promptly to help us plan and communicate effectively.
- Keep communication open. If you are unsure about anything, please email your child’s teacher. We are always here to help.
- Above all, nurture your child with warmth and love. Feeling secure, valued, and supported is the foundation for all learning.
- What do I do if I want to meet with my child’s teacher?
- We warmly encourage parents and whaanau to meet with their child’s teacher whenever needed. To help ensure purposeful and productive conversations, please:
- Email your child’s teacher to arrange a suitable meeting time, either before or after school.
- Avoid interrupting during class time. Teachers are responsible for their learners between 8.15am and 2.50pm, and cannot stop teaching for drop-in conversations.
- Allow up to 48 hours for a weekday email response.
- Maintain common courtesy and respect throughout all interactions. Together, we model the behaviour we expect our tamariki to learn.
