Hockey Skills Sessions
Glenbrook School has had Mike from Counties Manukau Hockey come in and teach us some Hockey Skills. We have had two sessions so far and have two more this week. We have learnt how to hold a Hockey Stick correctly, what side of the stick to hit the ball with and learning how to dribble the ball. Here are some photos from the first two sessions.
Volcano Experiment
We have been investigating Natural Disasters this term. On Friday Te Ra did an experiment using baking soda, vinegar, food colouring and dish washing liquid. We looked at what it looked like with and without food colouring and with and without dish washing liquid. Check out the photos to see what happened.
Ronald McDonald Show
The Junior Syndicate had a special visitor on Tuesday 8th September…Ronald McDonald! He came to talk to us about Road Safety and all the different ways we can be safe and what to look out for.
Earthquake Jelly Experiment
Miss McKenna brought in a tray of jelly to experiment with. Uenuku got into groups and worked together to create a building/structure out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Careful thought was put into how best to make the structure so that it could withstand the jelly earthquake (wobble)! Many students thought that structures lower to the ground had a better chance.
Earthquake Jelly Activity
We have been learning about how earthquakes make the ground shake. Mrs Simons brought in some wobbly jelly in a dish for us to see the effects an earthquake can have. We worked in teams of two to problem solve, collaborate, trial and design a structure out of toothpicks and marshmallows. We tested our buildings to see if they would still be standing up on the jelly after some strong shaking. Would a low structure stay standing? Would a tall structure stay standing? We had fun testing our structures. P.S. Our success… Read More
Boat Building
We have been busy building boats in Parekereke. We received a letter asking to help design a new life boat for the New Zealand Lifeguards. Collaborating in pairs we designed our lifeboats and then thought about which objects we could use to build our prototype. We are at the painting stage but before we paint our beautiful designs, our boat needs a good base coat of white. Great to see our newest class members, Wyatt and Katelyn joining in our activities and working well together.
Researching Natural Disasters
Currently we are learning about Natural Disasters. We have formed small investigation teams to study and learn about one Natural Disaster. We have chosen floods, volcanoes, tsunami’s, tornado’s, mudslides and earthquakes. We are researching information to present a report to the class. I’m sure if you asked anyone in our class a question about Natural Disasters we would be able to tell you the answer! We are all very engaged and focused learners in Te Whenua!!
Hockey Skills
Te Whenua had Mike from Counties Manukau Sport come today to show us some hockey skills. We got to play ‘Follow the Leader’ while dribbling with a hockey ball, then played a mini hockey game. We still have 3 more sessions to go! We loved it!
Hunua MP, Andrew Bayly, visits Glenbrook School
The students in Te Kauri got a chance to talk to Andrew Bayly, our local MP, about their Dragon’s Den projects. The students are studying financial capability within the context of making a product from scratch to sell at Calf Club Day or a Market Day. Ideas include luxury bath bombs, beauty products, massage oil, tiger balm and dog treats.
