Assessment

Assessment

Across the year, all tamariki are involved in ongoing assessment that helps teachers understand their progress and next learning steps. Assessment is part of everyday classroom practice and reflects the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum’s focus on progress, growth, and meaningful learning.

Teachers draw on a range of evidence to understand each child’s learning, including:

  • Formative Assessments: PATs, SMART Tool, Phonics Tool, Y2 Maths Checks, ICAS, Canterbury Exams, Education Perfect internal assessments and in-class checks to inform teaching.
  • Student Self-assessment: Using success criteria, reflective statements, and prompts to help students understand their strengths and areas for growth.
  • Peer Assessment: Providing feedback to classmates using shared success criteria and reflective questions.

This balanced approach supports students to develop ako agency, knowing themselves as learners, understanding their progress, and contributing to their own learning pathway.
